Holidays February 14

Valentine's Day (Valentine's Day)

This holiday owes its appearance to the Christian priest Valentina from the Roman city of Terni, who in about the year 269, under the rule of the Roman emperor Claudius II, secretly held a wedding of the legionnaires with their lovers. Secretly - because the emperor forbade the legionnaires to marry, so that they on campaigns would think only of the glory of the empire.

Upon learning of the activities of Valentine, the emperor ordered his execution. On the night before the execution, the priest, in love with the jailer’s daughter, wrote her a farewell letter telling about his love. She read this message after his execution. It is believed that it is precisely because of this that the tradition of writing Valentine's Day love notes on Valentine's Day appeared.

Subsequently, the Catholic Church declared Valentine a Christian martyr who suffered for the faith, and canonized. And since the year 496, after the Pope Gelasius signed a special decree, on February 14, they began to celebrate as Valentine's Day.

On this day, it is customary to bring gifts and “valentines” to your beloved ones, and he is also considered very successful for holding a wedding and a wedding. St. Martyr Tryphon Day

The church on this day honors the memory of St. Trifon, who lived in the III century in Nicaea. Having adopted Christianity from an early age, at the time of adolescence, he discovered the gift of miracles and began to heal the sick. The legend says that Trifon was able to cast out a demon from the daughter of the Roman emperor Gordian III. Being an idolater, the emperor treated Christians very loyally. But when the next emperor, Decius Traian, came to power, he began to persecute them, and Tryphon was executed.

This day was called Tryphon-mousegun, since it was customary to conjure mice on it so that they would not spoil the ricks with bread. Also on February 14, they appealed to the cats, treating them with milk to help the owners fight the mice.

On Trifonov's day, unmarried girls begged their suitors for themselves.

There were folk signs associated with this day: the stars in the sky on Tryphon’s night talked about late spring, the snow promised spring rains, and the fog indicated the occurrence of good weather. It was believed that the weather at Tryphon determines the weather for the rest of February.
